What Must I Do To Be Saved?

By Evangelist John Rice

What must I do to be saved? Here in the simplest, shortest form is put the question to which every man
must learn the answer, or spend eternity lost, away from God, suffering the torments of the damned!
Thank God, this question is asked and answered in the Word of God so simply that every soul can
understand it. There are other questions in God's Word which affect the soul's welfare, and many places in the Bible is the plan of salvation made plain, but only one place is this question given word for word, and there, too, we find the answer.

Paul and Silas were in jail in the city of Philippi and at midnight they sang and prayed until God broke down all the doors and broke the stocks which held their feet, with a mighty earthquake. The poor jailer, frightened and convicted of his sins, came to these two preachers and asked this question. Read it in Acts 16:29-31:

Introduction

The following is a set of eight outlines intended to help a born again Christian better understand his salvation. Many Christians neglect to study the doctrines that define New Testament salvation and miss the rich blessings that understanding them brings. Salvation has many different aspects; no single term or principle can adequately define it. To show believers the extent of what they have in Christ, the Holy Spirit put no less than eight separate doctrines in the Bible to explain New Testament salvation. Each one describes it from a slightly different perspective. A good understanding of these doctrines is essential for a Christian to become mature in the faith and truly appreciate what God has done for him. Every Christian should be fully acquainted with the terms justification, sanctification, regeneration, etc., yet many have only a shallow knowledge of these doctrines if any knowledge of them at all. However, if the believer will study the scriptures as the Lord commands him to (2Tim. 2:15), the Holy Spirit will reveal these truths to him (John 14:26). He will then have a greater confidence in the permanence of his salvation and also be better equipped to serve his Savior.

Now, can you see why I get so upset with those people who believe that they can lose their salvation? They are IMPUGNING God’s Character; His Words; His Promises; His Integrity; and His Abilities! They REFUSE TO BELIEVE the written record, and PREFER TO BELIEVE a LIE!

IF you could lose your salvation – all of these things would have to take place (and there are a lot more!). When we believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and receive Him as our Saviour, we aren’t just: “saved from Hell” (The Lord is not just a “Fire Escape” from “Hell”; or a “Life Preserver” to avoid the Lake of Fire. He hasn’t just given us a “Get Out Of “Hades” Free Card. When we receive the Lord Jesus Christ there’s a whole lot more that takes place in a believer – far more than most Christians are aware of! After King David had committed the heinous sins of adultery and murder, he wasn’t worried about “LOSING” his salvation – he didn’t ask God to “RESTORE” his salvation he asked God to: “Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.” [Psalms 51:12]

Please tell me: IF you can lose your Salvation, HOW do you get all of these things back? HOW do you get RE-PARDONED; RE-JUSTIFIED; RE-BORN; RE-SEALED; RE-ADOPTED; RE-CIRCUMCISED; RE-SEATED; ETC.; ETC; HOW do you become a sheep; a child; a son; a saint; etc.; etc.; all over AGAIN?

IF you can lose your Salvation, just exactly what kind of sin (or number of sins) does it take to lose it? You sure can get in a heap of trouble when you refuse to BELIEVE the word of God!

1 John 5:10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF YOU COULD “LOSE ” YOUR SALVATION?

1. GOD’S GRACE WOULD NOT BE SUFFICIENT TO KEEP YOU! {Acts 15:11, 20:32; Romans 5:21; Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 2:11}

2. THE FAITH OF CHRIST WOULD FAIL TO SECURE YOU! {Galatians 2:16; Philippians 3:9}

3. YOU WOULD LOSE CHRIST’S RIGHTEOUSNESS! {Romans 3:22, 5:17, 5:21, 10:4, 1Corinthians 5:21; Philippians 3:9; 2Peter 1:1}

4. THEN – ALL YOUR SINS WEREN’T REALLY FORGIVEN! {Acts 13:38;, 26:18; Ephesians 1:7, 4:32; Colossians 1:14, 2:13; 1 John 2:12}
