2 Timothy 3:16, 17

2Timothy 3:16, 17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

God has given us all we need to live Godly, righteous lives and a way to escape the snares of sin by giving us the Old and New Testament that we call the Scriptures.

There are five things we see in what God has given us.  He has given us things that are right, that they would reveal what is not right, and it shows us how to get right, to stay right, and it helps us to do right.  Gods word the Bible is all a Christian needs for his life.

I. Right-
The first thing the Word of God does is shows us what is Right.  The truth is the most important so it is the first point.  In the verse that Paul writes he says the word of God is Profitable for Doctrine.  There are two types of doctrine.
        1) Wrong or false doctrine built on the premise and philosophy of man.
        2) there is Right or True Doctrine.
Correct teaching from the word of God is very important and it is necessary if a person is going to grow spiritually in faith and grace.  Unfortunately so many today are teaching whatever they can in ministries that have nothing at all to do with correct teaching of the Bible and have more to do with getting money from their patrons pockets.

II.  Not Right
The Second point is that the Bible will point out what not Right.  Paul says they are...for reproof. That is it the Scriptures will reprove that which is wrong.  The Bible has this fantastic way of pointing out what is wrong in our lives and in our churches.  The problem is we are not always willing to listen to it.  But if we will it will do great things in our life.  Psalms 15:31 says “the ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise.”  When a man will hear the reproofs of Gods word he is will be wise.  The Bible shows us the correct teaching and practices for our lives and churches.

III. Get Right
The third thing Paul says the Scriptures are good for are ... for correction.  The Bible not only reproves our errors but it also gives us correction or shows us how to Get Right. Correction comes in many ways.  But correct study of Gods word will lead to correct teaching if there is error it will correct it so that there is no excuse for having errors being taught in our churches.  And there is no reason for us to be practicing things that are not correct either.
Whenever we are practicing, teaching or promoting wrong doctrines we are outside the will of God and our relationship is hindered.  Being hindered we can not hear God properly.  And often we will get worse not better.  So the word of God shows us how to Get Right

IV. Stay Right     Fourthly, Pauls says scriptures are for instruction in righteousness: we see the Bible gives us instruction in righteousness which means how to Stay Right.  The Bible can teach many things.  But its number one purpose is to help us stay in a right position with God through Christ.  The Bible instructs us how to live righteously and godly.

V.  Do Right
And fifthly, it helps us to be prepared to Do Right.  Vs 17 says “That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”  Be perfect is not an expression of total perfection but in context that we have all we need and fully provided for very good work.  Both in our personal walk and in our ability to witness.

The Bible was never “God breathed” to divide Christians into many organizations.  One reason organizations were created at the time of the reformation as a means of spreading the wealth.  When what the church needed to do was change from within but instead she changed her outside.  Many of the reformation churches still did things that were practiced before.  Some created whole new doctrines like Calvinism and set up a new hierarchy to rule over the masses.

Gods words were inspired for us to learn godly living, correct teaching of Gods word, and for illuminating our sinfulness and shortcomings (faults).  It was meant to help us grow ever closer to God.  Its purpose was to help us draw close to God through Jesus Christ and be right by Him.  It was to help us become more Christ like and at best to live up to the name to which was first subscribed to the church at Antioch, Christians "little christs".
Psalm 49:3 My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart [shall be] of understanding.

I got to thinking about if all scriptures are for the church today, and we are to rightly divide those scriptures, did God leave us a clear teaching onto how to rightly divide in his word?

Often we are looking to dispensationally divide the word, we could be only partially correct or even wrong in that understanding?

Consider these verses when seen together, could Paul in 2 Tim 3:16, 17 be telling us a type of dividing we need to do?

2Tim 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

2Tim 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:  That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works

Doctrines can be the major tenants of Christianity.  And doctrine can simply mean teaching.

Clearly ALL scriptures are for doctrine in the sense of teaching but not all are for major tenants of the faith.  While there are a lot of scriptures are for teaching and establishing major doctrines such as the Godhead, Deity of Christ, Christ sinless atonement, the gospel of grace, Imputed righteousness and others.  Some scripture are for teaching is on how, when and who to reproof.  Others on how to correct (either wrong doctrine or practice), others for teaching how one is to be righteous in actions in this wicked world, others for helping the man of God be perfect in conduct and practice, and lastly that he be furnished with the ability to do all good works.

Surely this is one way to rightly divide the word of truth.
